The draft was published on 14 April 2026. The public consultation took place online from 24 April to 22 June 2026. According to the canton, the submissions have since been analysed and the structural plan has been revised in specific areas. The results of the preliminary review by the federal government have also been incorporated into the version, which is now awaiting final political approval.
For property and location development, this is more than just a formal step. The cantonal structure plan sets out the broad outlines of spatial development and, once amended, will become binding on the canton and municipalities, as well as on the federal government. In doing so, Schwyz is establishing guidelines for future land-use decisions, infrastructure projects and the coordination between municipal planning and cantonal requirements.
Comprehensive package affecting land use and infrastructure
The 2025 revision of the structural plan focuses on tourism, transport, water bodies, energy and landfill sites. Among other things, it covers the spatial concept for tourism, public transport, shipping, hydropower utilisation, landfill sites and wastewater disposal. In addition, there are further guiding principles which the canton is incorporating into the structure plan to ensure that new projects and federal requirements are accommodated in the planning process.
The vessel mooring concept, for example, illustrates how individual issues are directly incorporated into the revision of the Structural Plan. The canton describes this framework as the basis for weighing up competing interests in spatial planning for major construction projects in or near water bodies. The tourism spatial concept is also explicitly designed as a basis for new tourism projects relevant to the structure plan.
The next step lies with the Cantonal Government
The Cantonal Government intends to adopt the amended structural plan before the end of 2026 and submit it to the Cantonal Assembly for information. A previous step taken by Schwyz regarding its structural plan also shows that, following a cantonal decision, approval at federal level may follow. According to the federal government, the 2022 amendment was approved by DETEC on 12 November 2024.
