Frauenfeld Becomes the Heart of Package Logistics

On June 14, 2026, Swiss Post broke ground in Frauenfeld on a new regional parcel center. The 200-million-franc investment is not a response to an immediate problem; rather, it is a strategic move that will shape the company’s course for the coming decades. This will make Thurgau the hub of Swiss package logistics.

The existing national parcel center in Frauenfeld already sorts more than half a million parcels on peak days, and volumes continue to grow. Online retail is booming, and the infrastructure is barely keeping up. Swiss Post is responding with a new facility on 1.45 hectares of leasehold land on Langfeldstrasse, right next to the existing center. Starting in late 2029, the conveyor belts at the new center are expected to sort up to 12,000 packages per hour.

Synergies Through Rail and Proximity
The location is no coincidence. The immediate proximity to the national parcel center creates operational synergies, and the rail network plays a central role in this. Swiss Post uses rail to handle internal transport between the major parcel centers in Switzerland. This connection makes Frauenfeld one of the most efficient logistics locations in German-speaking Switzerland. Approximately 220 new jobs will be created in the region.

Temporary Solution During Major Renovation
The new center serves a dual purpose. Over the next ten to fifteen years, Swiss Post will renovate its three national parcel centers in Härkingen, Frauenfeld, and Daillens. While the existing Frauenfeld center is being renovated, the new building will bridge its capacity gap and subsequently serve as a permanent capacity booster. In doing so, Swiss Post is repeating a proven strategy, as it had already built regional relief centers in Rümlang, Pratteln, and Buchs in 2021 before the national centers were renovated.

Billions for Switzerland’s Logistics
The project in Frauenfeld is part of a broader investment drive. In recent years alone, Swiss Post has invested over 250 million Swiss francs in new parcel sorting centers. At the same time, modernization programs are underway at all three national centers. The Härkingen project alone will cost up to 400 million Swiss francs. By 2029, this will result in a new logistics infrastructure capable of supporting Switzerland through the next phase of e-commerce growth.
