Dietikon Is Building the School of the Future

Since 1969, a massive concrete cube has dominated the cityscape of Dietikon. Anyone walking past the Limmattal Education Center might at first glance see only postwar architecture. But the Canton of Zurich is spending 42 million francs to renovate this historic building and transform it into a 21st-century learning center.

July 2026

Architect Georges Künzler designed the vocational school building in 1969 as a functional testament to the economic miracle. Today, it stands in its original condition, a building full of contradictions. It has inadequate insulation and structural weaknesses, yet its façade is explicitly classified by the cantonal historic preservation inventory as worthy of protection.

Coordinates of a New Learning Culture
Long before the groundbreaking ceremony, the BZLT asked how learning works today. The answer is n47e8, named after Dietikon’s geographic coordinates. The concept combines individualization, practical skills, and digital infrastructure. Students work at their own pace on “missions” via a learning management system, in both general education and vocational courses. The building is now bringing to life what educational theory has already envisioned.

The Attic as a Manifesto
The top floor becomes an open learning landscape. No more classrooms—instead, flexible zones for collaborative and self-directed work. Around 1,250 students in logistics, road transport, and recycling professions will use this space every day.

Sustainability Without Compromise
SNBS Gold, Minergie-ECO, photovoltaics on the flat roof, connection to the Limeco district heating network, and green roof surfaces for cooling and biodiversity. This isn’t greenwashing; it’s a committed approach that shapes the building’s entire life cycle.

Art as a Program
The artist duo Veli & Amos is designing the undersides of the stairs in the atrium with flip-flop paint finishes and neon signs. For a school that supports people entering the workforce or seeking a career change every day, this is not mere decoration.

Completion in Summer 2027
School operations will begin in August 2027, and Dietikon will not simply be getting back a renovated school building. It will be receiving proof that historic preservation, sustainability, and forward-looking education are not a contradiction, but can succeed together.
