The canton that wants more

Ticino has positioned itself as a canton of the future. Innovation Park, SBB plant, Cornaredo, Tram-Treno - the list of major projects is long. But visions alone only change a square meter when excavators start rolling. 2026 will show where paper becomes concrete.

June 2026

If you read about the Ticino economic region using the big buzzwords, you get the impression of a canton on the move. Innovation Park, new railroad infrastructure, site developments in Bellinzona and Lugano, hotel projects and clear location marketing all support this finding. The canton has become more visible, technology-related topics have gained in importance and several key projects are running in parallel.

755 million on a greenfield site
The ground-breaking ceremony for the new SBB plant in Arbedo-Castione took place in September 2025. cHF 755 million is being invested in Europe’s most modern railroad plant, which will secure around 360 jobs and 80 apprenticeships from mid-2028. At the same time, the Officine site in Bellinzona will be freed up for an urban transformation on 150,000 square meters.

Visible progress in Lugano
The Cornaredo stadium project has reached the 80% mark and is scheduled to open in 2026. 130 million Swiss francs are being invested in the Polo Sportivo e degli Eventi, which is providing urban development impetus far beyond sport. Tourism confirms the trend with 998,234 overnight stays in the Lugano area, an increase of 2.5 percent compared to 2024.

Ambition meets process
At the same time, the reality check reveals gaps. Construction investment in Switzerland fell by 0.7 percent in nominal terms in 2024, while private building construction investment fell by 2.5 percent. The Tram Treno project was delayed several times before the Federal Administrative Court gave the green light at the end of March 2026. Such processes noticeably slow down momentum.

Diversity as a trump card
Bellinzona is focusing on industrial transformation, Lugano on urban densification and lifestyle tech, Locarno on tourism repositioning. If it succeeds in combining innovation, infrastructure, energy and real estate development, the canton will further strengthen its position in the national competition between locations. It is precisely this tension that makes the Ticino 2026 economic area so worth reading.
