Andermatt is significantly expanding its sports zone

A sports and recreation center with approximately 5,000 square meters of usable space is to be built in Andermatt. Although the project has been postponed until 2032/33, it will fill a key gap in amenities between the village center, Andermatt Reuss, and year-round tourism.

Andermatt is planning the next major phase of its tourism and community development on a much larger scale than originally envisaged. The indoor pool with a fitness center that was previously planned will be transformed into a sports and recreation center with approximately 5,000 square meters of usable space. This will not only bring recreational facilities closer to residents but will also create a new hub in the village center designed to strengthen the functional connection between Andermatt Dorf and Andermatt Reuss.

Plans include a 25-meter pool, a family pool with an outdoor area, a spa, fitness and yoga rooms, climbing facilities, padel courts, bowling, a restaurant, a kids’ club, and—in winter—an ice rink and an event space. According to available information, the building permit application is to be submitted in the coming weeks. The opening is scheduled for 2032/33, with construction set to begin in 2027.

From a recreational hub to a village anchor
The real news value lies less in the sheer size of the project than in its role within the overall area. The sports zone was already included in the 2008 master plan, but is now being reimagined as a social and spatial hub. This is significant for Andermatt because, in recent years, the resort has grown primarily through hotels, second homes, tourist infrastructure, and the expansion of mountain railways. In contrast, weather-independent offerings for families and for everyday life in the village have remained more limited.

The center is intended to fill precisely this gap. It is aimed not only at visitors but also explicitly at the local population and second-home owners. The fact that the municipality of Andermatt conducted a survey and a public workshop during the development phase also shows that the project is not intended to be viewed merely as an additional offering for tourism. It is meant to become a practical gathering place for everyday life.

The Long Timeline Remains the Stumbling Block
As ambitious as the project is, its timeline remains striking. A sports center in Andermatt was publicly announced many years ago. Now, for the first time, a highly detailed and concrete plan is available. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go until the planned opening in 2032 or 2033. This is crucial for the development of the site: the added value in terms of revitalization, quality of stay, and year-round use will only materialize once the project is actually built and operational.

The facility is to be operated jointly by Andermatt Swiss Alps AG and the municipality of Andermatt. This is a key factor for future management, as such a facility must be run in an economically viable manner, balancing tourism offerings, public use, and seasonal peaks. The sports zone will thus serve as a test to see whether Andermatt can make the transition from an alpine resort with top-tier offerings to a destination with broader appeal for everyday life.
