Zeiningen Opens the Gate to the Salt Field
In Zeiningen, the cantonal land-use plan for the Nordfeld salt mining area has been available for public review since August 18, 2026. Those affected have until September 16 to file objections. This marks the next phase of a planning process—binding on landowners—for drilling sites, pipelines, and other facilities.
This step is crucial from a planning law perspective because the cantonal land-use plan establishes the binding basis for subsequent building permits for the structures and facilities necessary for salt production. In the Aargau procedure, the 30-day public review period is followed by the cantonal government’s consideration of objections; only then does the matter proceed to the political decision-making process.
The Nordfeld area is located in the Möhlinerfeld, about 1.5 kilometers northwest of Wallbach, and, according to the planning report, covers just over 100 hectares. About two-thirds of the zone lies within the municipality of Wallbach, with the remainder on land in Zeiningen. A corridor for transport pipelines is also planned to enable the extraction of brine and water for operations.
More Than a Formality
For landowners, operators, and planners, this public review is more than a mere formality. Anyone asserting a legitimate interest of their own may submit written objections, including a request and justification, by Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The documents are available at the Zeiningen municipal administration office and can also be accessed digitally through the canton.
Delicate Boundary Adjustments
The plan was not simply superimposed on the area. According to the cantonal documents, while the zone borders a priority groundwater area of cantonal significance, it does not overlap with it. The perimeter was also adjusted around Lake Ägelsee. Several parcels in the sensitive vicinity of the amphibian habitat were explicitly excluded from the zone. At the same time, Nordfeld borders a gravel extraction area of cantonal significance near Zeiningen. The documents therefore require coordination between salt mining and potential future gravel extraction.
Supply Drives the Process Forward
The background extends beyond the municipal boundaries. The canton links Nordfeld to the long-term security of the salt supply and to the concession in the Rheinfelden-Möhlin area, which has been extended through 2075. As early as the public participation phase, the canton of Aargau had stipulated that Nordfeld should be designated in the structural plan and implemented in parallel with a cantonal land-use plan. The current public review thus marks the transition from a strategic designation to a regulation binding on landowners.
