Transport and nature project sustainably enhances urban area

STRABAG is modernising a 700-metre stretch along the Mühletychbach stream between the cantonal school and the swimming pool in Zofingen with water, road and utility line construction work. Once construction is complete in October 2026, the watercourse should return to its natural character.

Aargau, June 2026

Schlieren-based STRABAG AG has started construction work in Zofingen on a transport and local recreation project between the cantonal school and the swimming pool. The construction company announced the start of construction work in a press release. The upcoming work is focussed on hydraulic engineering, road and path construction as well as utility line construction. According to the information, 1500 cubic metres of excavated material will be removed and 412 tonnes of asphalt will be laid.

“Our teams from Oensingen and Olten are working hand in hand. Because we understand each other well and the distances are short, we are making rapid progress and can realise the project for the city as usual to a high standard,” said Denis Durakovic, Civil Engineering and Road Construction Manager Mittelland at STRABAG AG. The main objectives are to improve the transport and recreational infrastructure of the western part of the city and to enhance the ecological value of green spaces.

The project area runs for 700 metres along the Mühletychbach stream. The original industrial utilisation of the stream was discontinued some time ago. Weirs and bank walls that are now unused are to be dismantled so that the watercourse can regain its natural character. A Liebherr R920 compact is being used on the construction site for the first time. According to the press release, the wheeled excavator was deemed ideal for the tight space conditions during path construction and stream renaturalisation due to its small tail swing radius.

Construction is scheduled to end in October 2026, after which there will be a final report including “exciting before-and-after comparisons” to show the extent to which the enhancement of the local recreation area has progressed.
