Lion-Stone from the heart of Central Switzerland – our own Rooterberger sandstone

Luzern ZH, October 2021

The world-famous lion monument in Lucerne consists of solid rock from a former Lucerne sandstone quarry. Since 1944 and still today, the same so-called Molasse sandstone (Rooterberger sandstone) has been mined by the family company Emilio Stecher AG.

The unusual color is equally popular with all designers!
We use this great material for beautiful facades, for renovations, as massive borders or staircases, for new and old buildings, as noble kitchen covers, also for floor coverings inside and outside and of course as split or hand-embossed bricks, cover plates for walls or solid stairs in horticulture.

20 million old natural stone from our own sandstone quarry on Rooterberg
Because of the famous lion monument, the Lucerne molasses sandstone from which the monument is carved has achieved worldwide fame. The family company Emilio Stecher AG has been mining exactly the same massive rock in its own sandstone quarry on Rooterberg (LU) since 1944.

Gray-blue sandstone as the perfect facade material that loves monument preservation and beautifies the townscape
For more than 70 years, Emilio Stecher AG has been mining nothing but petrified sandy beach in its own sandstone quarry. During the millennia-long period of time and due to the high pressure and the temperatures that result from diving into the earth’s interior, the former sand has solidified into sandstone and shines in a uniform gray-blue color. This noble material was not only used for monuments, but also increasingly for historical buildings such as churches, castles and museums. In the last five years we have built large facades with our beautiful sandstone in various processes.

Convince yourself at the new wellness hotel Cocon at the “Seerose” in Meisterschwanden on Lake Hallwil, where 1,700 square meters of ventilated facade panels with a flamed surface were installed. Or at Stadthofstrasse 12 in Lucerne, where we were able to beautifully clad a historic building with only 20 millimeter thin panels in our own stone-face compact facade system (www.stoneface.ch), which is sold by Sarna-Granol in Sarnen. New constructions or conversions in sandstone are approved by the authorities very quickly without any problems and with large requirements. These fit into the environment at any time, have a subtle effect and are highly welcome as local material in the city or townscape. The prices of the sandstone are affordable and can easily compete with all competing products.
