Energy supplier invests in renewable heat and grid infrastructure
ewl energie wasser luzern posted a profit of 38 million Swiss francs in 2025. Although lower energy prices and reduced sales of natural gas caused total revenue to fall by 3.8 per cent to 374 million Swiss francs, turnover in the heating division rose significantly by 14 per cent.
ewl energie wasser luzern has made further progress in implementing its strategic shift towards a sustainable and regionally rooted energy supply. According to a press release, the Lucerne-based energy supplier invested a total of CHF 74.0 million in 2025 in the expansion of renewable heat, grid and plant infrastructure, and digitalisation.
Total revenue was affected by lower energy prices and reduced sales of natural gas. It fell by 3.8 per cent to CHF 373.5 million. As operating expenses also fell by 5.3 per cent at the same time, profit rose slightly to CHF 37.9 million. In the previous year, it had been CHF 37.6 million.
In contrast, turnover in the heating business segment rose by 14 per cent to CHF 29.4 million. This was driven in particular by the expansion of the networks, new district heating centres and numerous new connections. 66 per cent of the heat comes from the waste-to-energy plant, 8.2 per cent from waste heat, 7.5 per cent from lake water, 4.4 per cent from heat pumps and 3.6 per cent from wood chips and pellets. Natural gas now accounts for only 10.3 per cent of the heat.
The strong results in both the heating and telecommunications business areas “show that ewl’s strategic direction is working and that our solutions meet the needs of our customers – sustainably, efficiently and with local roots,” CEO Patrik Rust is quoted as saying in the press release.
The company is proposing a dividend of 6.9 million Swiss francs to the City of Lucerne at the Annual General Meeting.
