Thun, June 2026

The results of the public consultation on the municipal area development plan for the Thun railway station district are now available, according to a press release. According to information provided at the start of the public consultation, the area development plan serves as a coordination and management tool for the long-term development of the urban neighbourhood. In the long term, this is planned as a mixed neighbourhood with residential, work and leisure uses as well as high-quality open spaces.

The public and interested organisations have now had the opportunity to comment on the plans. In total, more than 80 submissions were received from political parties, associations and organisations, transport companies, businesses and private individuals.

According to the press release, the majority of the feedback supports the direction of neighbourhood development as well as the operating and design concept (BGK) for the station urban space. This envisages upgrading the station square into a prestigious calling card for the city and further developing Mönchplatz as the new station address on the south side.

As obstacle-free bus stops are required by law, these are to be located on both sides of the railway facilities in future. A total of 18 bus stops are planned on Bahnhofstrasse, Seestrasse and Mönchplatz. Additional tree planting and more bicycle parking spaces are intended to strengthen the character of the neighbourhood and improve the quality of stay.

Now that the consultation process has been completed, work on the preliminary project for the urban space at Thun railway station will begin. At the same time, planning work is underway for the necessary development regulations. Construction of the first stage is scheduled to begin in 2032 at the latest.
