The Bern-based planning company eicher pauli, which specialises in energy and buildings, has developed an energy and building technology concept for a former building of the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Burgdorf on behalf of the Bern Office for Land and Buildings. The academic educational institution has relocated to the Biel/Bienne campus. According to a press release, the vacated property is to be used by the TecLab education and innovation centre in future. Due to a change in utilisation requirements and the age of the property, the building is due to undergo an energy-efficient renovation in accordance with the cantonal requirements for climate-friendly construction.

In order to make the building climate-friendly for the next 25 to 30 years and to ensure its future operation, it is to be upgraded to the Minergie Eco standard, according to the press release.

Careful handling of the existing building is planned as a central climate protection measure during construction. This includes reusing, refurbishing and retaining the existing building fabric wherever possible. Taking into account the aspects of circular construction, a high degree of utilisation flexibility was also anchored in the plans. Following the realisation of the technical building concept, the project is “exemplary for sustainable and circular construction in the education sector”.

The TecLab was created on the initiative of the Bern University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Bern University of Applied Sciences, the Bern University of Teacher Education, the Canton of Bern’s Department of Education and Culture, the City of Burgdorf and the trade and industry associations Handels- und Industrieverein Kanton Bern and Berner KMU.
