Lucerne is building its AI hub

The Digital & AI Community is an independent, not-for-profit network dedicated to digitalisation and artificial intelligence. It helps businesses to critically assess ideas before investing in consultancy or software. The starting point is not the technology, but the specific business problem.

The Community does not develop its own software and receives no commission from recommendations. It sees itself as a neutral first point of contact for SMEs seeking guidance, wishing to minimise risks and plan their next steps on a sound footing. It is supported by the business sector, academia and the public sector. The Canton of Lucerne supports the organisation under a service agreement.

Two networks join forces
Its roots go back to 2022. That was when the Lucerne AI Community and digitalswitzerland Central Switzerland were established. Both initiatives brought together businesses, universities, public authorities and technology partners. In 2026, they combined their activities under the Digital & AI Community brand. Today, the network comprises more than 70 member companies, ten strategic partners and has organised over 80 events.

AI starts with the business problem
The Digital & AI Community does not start by discussing models, platforms or data architectures. It begins with a situation analysis. In a structured initial consultation, it works with a company to clarify which problem needs solving, which processes can be improved and which approach to a solution makes sense.

This is followed by workshops, inspiration talks, keynotes and training courses. To facilitate implementation, the Community connects companies with vetted partners bearing the ‘Digital & AI Community Recommended’ label. In doing so, it bridges a common gap: between an initial interest in AI and the selection of a suitable partner, many SMEs lack an independent assessment.

Exchange rather than buzzwords
The monthly AI Breakfasts are the most visible format. Experts, executives and interested parties discuss specific use cases. Topics such as data anonymisation show that productivity isn’t everything; data protection, governance and the responsible handling of data are just as much a part of the picture.

Fireside chats and the annual Digital Day round off the programme. These events highlight what companies in Central Switzerland are already developing and implementing. Access is deliberately kept low-threshold. Not every SME needs a comprehensive transformation programme straight away. Often, a clearly defined use case is the most valuable first step.

Location policy with practical relevance
The community links research, technology and regulatory issues to the day-to-day operations of small and medium-sized enterprises. This is central to the Lucerne economic region. SMEs characterise the region. Their ability to use AI effectively influences productivity, innovative capacity and the demand for skilled workers.

The vision is ambitious. SMEs in Central Switzerland should demonstrate how AI generates added value. This will not be determined by individual flagship projects, but by numerous effective applications in everyday life – when administrative tasks are streamlined, knowledge remains accessible and staff gain time for more challenging tasks.
