According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empa.ch\/web\/s604\/beton-aus-dem-3d-drucker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>, the building elements are stable without traditional steel reinforcement and are virtually cement-free. The material is designed to store carbon dioxide as it cures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">The research is being carried out as part of the European CARBCOMN project (Carbon-negative compression dominant structures for decarbonised and de-constructable concrete buildings). Alongside Empa, researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (<a href=\"https:\/\/ethz.ch\/de.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ETH<\/a>) and the Empa spin-off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.re-fer.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">re-fer<\/a> in Seewen, as well as other European partners, are involved in the development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">The material for 3D printing is derived from recycled industrial waste, such as steel slag. Geometrically optimised shapes are produced using a special process. Iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMA) from re-fer are used as reinforcement. To cure this concrete, carbon dioxide is injected into a combustion chamber, where it chemically bonds with the concrete mixture. &ldquo;We are combining unique expertise here &ndash; 3D printing, structural <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Performance&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Wertentwicklung eines Portfolios&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">performance<\/span> and our speciality: iron-based shape memory alloys,&rdquo; Empa researcher Moslem Shahverdi is quoted as saying in the press release. &ldquo;On the one hand, we use digital manufacturing methods to build in a resource-efficient manner. On the other hand, we are replacing conventional cement with binders that have a lower carbon footprint.&rdquo; The concrete components are also designed so that they can be dismantled after use and reused elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Launched in 2024, the four-year project is funded under <a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-europe_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horizon Europe<\/a> and brings together eleven leading research institutions and architectural firms from across Europe.&nbsp;According to the press release, these include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ugent.be\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ghent University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tu-darmstadt.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Darmstadt Technical University<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upatras.gr\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Patras<\/a> in Greece, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaha-hadid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zaha Hadid Architects<\/a> from London, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcarchitects.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mario Cucinella Architects<\/a> from Bologna, and the companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesis-srl.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesis <\/a>from Penta di Fisciano in Italy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orbix.be\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">orbix<\/a> from Genk, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incremental3d.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incremental 3D<\/a> from Innsbruck.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from Switzerland are working with European partners to develop concrete elements produced using 3D printers.
